Call for Consultant to develop sales and marketing strategy for Standard Microfinance Bank

United Nations Environment (through its Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants) has retained UNEP DTU Partnership to develop a scalable, sustainable finance model (including feasibility of lending products) for clean energy solutions in Adamawa State, Nigeria. The clean technology solutions in focus for the project are solar lighting and clean cook stoves. The finance models will address bottlenecks and barriers SLCP finance and, specifically, build the capacity of Standard Microfinance Bank.

The project objective is to develop a pilot program which could potentially be scaled throughout Nigeria.

As part of this initiative, UNEP DTU Partnership will undertake a capacity building and product development activities that will lead to a development of a lending product for the Standard Microfinance Bank (SMB) in Nigeria.

The work to be undertaken will consist of numerous awareness raising, marketing, market development, capacity development and financial modelling and planning activities all of which will create a platform for the SMB to launch a clean energy household lending product across the Adamawa state, Nigeria.

Main activities and responsibilities

The local consultant is expected to develop and coordinate product, sales and marketing strategy development for a new lending product for SMB. Specifically, the main components of the work are:

• Strategic Product Development Plan: Engagement with communities in the ADAMAWA state, engagement with providers of clean energy household solutions (primarily solar PV power/lighting), engagement with relevant local authorities and engagement with SMB to define the preferred household energy solutions (preferred equipment, suppliers, cost, installation/service/maintenance). Product development plan will also include design of the financing product/mechanism including credit assessment criteria to be provided by SMB to its clients. Finally, the product development plan is expected to include organization of a stakeholder coordination event where all relevant stakeholders will have opportunity to share their inputs.

• Marketing Plan: Engagement with relevant stakeholders and development of a marketing plan for SMB. The plan will among other components include expected sales of clean energy household devices over next 3-5 years, proposed sales, and distribution and after sales network including division roles and responsibilities among partners, pricing strategy, promotion strategy etc.

• Training Module Documentation: Development of training modules and materials to be used for SMB loan officers and/or its sales network in a collaboration with SMB, technology suppliers and relevant community partners. Training modules are expected to equip sales network staff with appropriate knowledge and tools to be able to sell the clean energy devices to customers. Training may also include local or regional study tours for relevant SMB staff to gain further knowledge on the technologies or financing instruments.

• Training reports on SMB loan officers: Development of a report summarizing outcomes of the training sessions for the SMB staff and partners.

Contract terms

The consultant shall deliver all expected deliverables by December 31, 2018.

Qualification requirements

The appointed consultant should have following skills:
• Previous experience with sales, marketing and financing of clean household energy solutions.
• Previous experience with design of financial products and instruments.
• Previous experience in training/education.
• Knowledge of the local authorities and context within Adamawa State, Nigeria.
• Proficient analytical and writing skills and excellent English as well as local language communication skills.


Expected budget including all expenses is US$ 15,000.00
